Dear Lone Star – All is Forgiven

Dear Lone Star – All is Forgiven

The Lone Star is a restaurant we have visited on many occasions and was once a firm favourite. It offered the whole package: location, ambience, service and most importantly, tremendous food. But then something seemed to change. After a period of absence, a recent visit has restored our faith in this iconic west coast restaurant.

Winter sun in Bimshire

Winter sun in Bimshire

It’s snowing back home in the UK but here at Ocean View it feels like a perfect, hot English summer’s day. The sky is blue (very blue), the birds are singing and there is even a smell of new mown grass in the air. The island is busy at the moment and it’s clear that we are not the only Brits to have worked out how to banish the winter blues.

Private chef Lionel makes it easy (like Wednesday evening…)

There are some wonderful restaurants on the west coast of Barbados but we’ve discovered that dining in can be even more of an occasion – particularly if you hire your own chef for the evening! Lionel is now our firmest friend and we can now make arrangements for him to prepare meals for all our guests.

Watersports and Quiche – They’re Grrreat!

Watersports and Quiche – They’re Grrreat!

My alarm went off at 7am, the first time it had been set all holiday. It was raining – a short-lived but torrential tropical storm – but I had an appointment to keep and ran out to the hire car. The exchange had to be fast; he handed me a slim, circular package covered in silver foil. As I took it from him I discovered it was still warm. I thanked him, we raised our windows and drove off in different directions.

Mullins Beach Bar & Grill

Mullins Beach Bar & Grill

We are very lucky to be just a short stroll away from one of the best beach bars on the west coast of Barbados – Mullins Beach Bar & Grill. The bar overlooks Mullins bay and after a period as a relatively fancy restaurant it has recently been taken over and has “returned to its roots” as a beach bar (which also serves very good food).

Animal Flower Cave

Animal Flower Cave

We have been having a short pre-Christmas break at Ocean View and decided to drag ourselves away from the beach yesterday and take a short excursion to see the Animal Flower Cave at the northern tip of the island (just 9 miles from Ocean View). It was well worth the trip and we thought merited a few words here.

Crop Over

Crop Over

Originally a celebration to mark the end of the sugar cane harvest, Crop Over is an eagerly awaited feature on the Barbados calendar with many ex-pat Bajans returning to the island in time for the finale on the first Monday of August – Grand Kadooment. Kadooment Day is a public holiday in Barbados and on Monday 5th August we were lucky enough to be in town to join (or at least witness) the festivities.

A Turtle Encounter

A Turtle Encounter

Yesterday we had a wonderful turtle encounter. As we stood at the water’s edge on Mullins beach we saw the shadow of a turtle no more than 20 feet from the shore. At a guess it was relatively young at around 2 feet long and it was very happy to potter in the shallow water, coming up for a gulp of air every five minutes or so.

(un)Wired for Sound

I’m very grateful to the smiling Virgin Atlantic check-in guy who turned a blind eye to my 26 kg suitcase ahead of my flight to Barbados this morning. As a male-of-the-species, I obviously pride myself on travelling light and usually blame any excess weight on Lisa’s shoes, hairdryer and make-up. This morning I travelled alone so only had one thing to blame: a Sony NS410 Wireless Speaker, weighing in at over 5 kg.

Our Long Weekend in Barbados

Our Long Weekend in Barbados

As we sit on this Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330 on the tarmac at Grantley Adams airport ready to head home, it seems amazing that we only arrived 4 days ago. We have done so much. We have met with a lawyer, accountant and estate agent. We have opened a bank account, visited the Barbados Water Authority, the Power and Light Company and more...

Our Little Piece of Paradise

Our Little Piece of Paradise

We spent 12 months looking for the right place to buy and knew we had found what we were looking for when we were shown around Ocean View. To put our intuition to the test, we went back and stayed there as 'rental guests' for a few days in May and a month later the legal formalities were complete and Ocean View was our new home in the sun.
